I’m currently supporting Kate Fielding on her Churchill Fellowship, focused on hairdressing salons and barbershops doing active social change work. Checkout Kate’s site for more details about the fellowship. I am writing more about place.
First Kate and I explored Joburg using the href=”http://www.mabonengprecinct.com/”>Maboneng Precint as a base. (Kate is in Maboneng in the pic below). It’s an awesome piece of urban renwal in progress, I highly recommend it.
The Shosholoza Meyl train took us to Cape Town through the mountains. 28 hours well spent, the dining car was a highlight, as was the view.
The past week has been all about Cape Town – I was amazed how dynamic the local design and making scene is! There’s a Fablab here, many coworking spaces and artisans.
I was very excited to get some custom boots made of farmed Ostrich leather by Jumande of Diomande.com (see image below). I’m coming back to South Africa for sure!
